Mark's Money Tip:

Grants Management Office recommends that you submit reimbursement requests on a monthly basis for the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, or at the minimum at least quarterly.

Mark Gageby is a Education Program Representative for the South Dakota Department of Education and oversees funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program.

Resource Corner:

STEM Gems
STEM Gems are short discovery-based experiences. They involve little or no materials and may be easily implemented by educators who are not STEM specialists. Each STEM Gem is designed to engage young people in active experiential learning. The activities begin by setting up connections to prior knowledge, then a hands on activity provides new concepts and the opportunity to design experiments to answer any questions the kids discover. Finally, a connection to a different scenario for the concept is provided to help cement and evaluate the learning.

2018 Grant Competition

We are hopeful Congress will fully fund the 21st CCLC program again so we are moving forward with our grant competition. All application materials will be online the first week of January on the 21st CCLC website. Any organization that wishes to apply must first submit a Notice of Intent to apply. These are due January 19, 2018. After we receive all the Notices of Intent, each contact person will be added to the GMS System and will be given instructions on how to complete the application. There will also be two informational webinars.

Afterschool Day at the Capitol 2018

Each year during legislative session, OST programs converge on Pierre to participate in the annual SoDakSACA-sponsored “Afterschool Day at the Capitol”. Programs have booths highlighting what ‘after school programs’ are all about, and feature what their programs provide the children in their own communities. Many amazing and productive conversations with legislators and other officials in state government take place on this day! Click here for more information and to sign up to display your program. This year’s date is February 7, 2018. Hope to see some of you there!
