NCLB K-12 Educational Technology Standards
Through the No Child Left
Behind Act (ESEA Title II, Part D, Subpart 1), the Enhancing
Education Through Technology (Ed Tech) Program was created with the
primary goal being to improve student academic achievement through
the use of technology in schools. It was also designed to assist
every student in crossing the digital divide by ensuring that every
student is technologically literate by the end of eighth grade, and
to encourage the effective integration of technology with teacher
training and curriculum development to establish successful
research-based instructional methods.
As a result of this legislation, a committee comprised of
approximately 40 k-16 educators from across South Dakota met
numerous times during the 2006-2007 school year to develop a set of
state educational technology standards which reflected a cumulative
effort of many different technology related educational programs in
South Dakota. The draft standards were then presented to and
approved by the South Dakota Board of Education in July 2007.

of Curriculum, Technology and Assessment staff that carried the
primary responsibility for overseeing the revision and editing the
SD Educational Technology Standards. Peg Henson provided primary
leadership, direction, facilitation, and guidance to this committee.
The South Dakota Department of Education expresses special thanks to
the Technology Leaders of the Rapid City School District, all of the
individual teachers, administrators, educational technology faculty,
community members and business leaders, grandparents, parents and
students who took the time to provide thoughtful comments and
assistance during the public comment period. And a special thanks to
intern Kelsey Hanson for all her hard work in preparing the layout
of the final document and supporting materials.
