Activities

  1. Students can compare the role of the president to the role of the governor. What responsibilities do they have in common? How do their positions differ?
  2. Students will interview a community member who remembers the Blizzard of 1997.  Community members will identify the role of executive branch during a time of crisis.

Assessment

List and/or explain the role of the Governor using charting, pair and share strategy, class discussion.

Activities

  1. Students can compare and contrast the composition of the South Dakota State Supreme
  2. Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.

    Students can track the progress of cases appealed through the South Dakota judicial system.

Assessment

List and/or explain the role of the Supreme Court Justices using charting, pair and share strategy, class discussion.

Video clips of South Dakota Supreme Court Justices explaining the role of the judicial branch. The judges can explain their interpretation of judicial review and why it can be controversial. (Possible topics:  definition of the judicial review, process of the being a justice, How doesn’t the Supreme Court differ from a lower court?, How does the state unified judicial system relate the federal judicial system?
