DOE/PRC ask for input on upcoming Life Skills workshops

The Department of Education and the NE Prevention Resource Center are asking for your input on the location and grade level of an upcoming Life Skills workshop.  If you are interested in sending staff to a future training, please reply to either person listed below with your preferences.

As many of you know, the SD Department of Education and the Prevention Resource Centers collaborate to conduct Life Skills Training in South Dakota on a periodic basis.  Life Skills Training, designed by Dr. Gilbert Botvin, has been designated as an exemplary program by the US Department of Education.  The curriculum has two components, one for elementary and one for middle school. The elementary component can be implemented in either grades 3, 4, 5 or grades 4, 5, 6.  The middle school component can be implemented in either grades 6, 7, 8, or grades 7, 8, 9. The curriculum addresses issues related to alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, communication, assertiveness, self-esteem, decision making, and stress.

The training is a two-day workshop and those who attend are able to obtain college credit or teacher renewal credit or CCBT’s.  The cost for the training will be $30.  The cost of the curriculum for the participants is funded by SD Department of Education and the SD Department of Health.

Where the next few trainings are held will be determined by input received from schools; what levels are needed is also open for input.  If staff in your school is interested in the Life Skills Training, please reply to with answers to the following questions:
