Driver Ed updates noted before busy summer season

As schools get ready for local driver education classes, the Department of Education has reminders about filing applications and about completing the student’s certificate at the end of the training.  Questions about these and other procedures can be directed to Pam Hoepfer, Office of Accreditation and Teacher Quality, phone 605-773-3553 or pam.hoepfer@state.sd.us .

►DE1 application due

Spring/Summer Driver's education instructors are reminded to complete and return the

2004 DE1 application.  For an application form, please contact the Office of Accreditation and Teacher Quality at the phone number or email shown above

Student certificates

The Dept. of Revenue & Regulation has asked us to remind driver education instructors of the following requirements:

  • From a recent situation:  A driver education instructor had signed a new completion certificate so the student could avoid testing (the original certificate only waives the testing at the exam station for ONE YEAR). The examiner at the licensing station asked the student if she had completed another class; her response was “NO”, so the examiner had her complete the driving portion of the test.

  • A licensing station has reported that it has received a completion certificate that has been post-dated by the instructor prior to the student’s 14th birthday in order to allow the student to get the test waived for one year from the 14th birthday.

The situations described in these instances are both unacceptable; a driver education instructor should not attempt either of these practices.  The regulations are in place to insure the safety of the young driver as well all other drivers on the roadway.  Driver education instructors are expected to uphold the laws of South Dakota and all procedures related to them.
