Pierre’s Discovery Center offers May programs for students, PTA members, educators

Schools are invited to send participants to special events at Pierre’s Discovery Center during May.  Scholarships or registration subsidies are available for some groups; go to www.sd-discovery.com to see if you or your group qualifies. Program discounts are always available for those with classroom memberships. Call 224-8295 for reservations.

●  MAY 6, 7 & 8:    CAPTURED WORLDS ART/GEOMETRY RESIDENCY
by world-renowned SD artist Dick Termes

Don't miss this opportunity for your students to work with a world class artist!  Middle school and high school classes are invited to schedules times to work with Termes on three "Captured World" polyhedrons that will remain on permanent display in the SD Discovery Center after the residency.

This is a relatively concentrated project so only a few reservations will be available for classes to work with Termes, call now to reserve this once in a lifetime experience for your students.  Made possible by the SD Arts Council.

●  MAY 19:  THE GROSSOLOGY OF THE LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION*

Students will be thoroughly entertained and “grossed out” as Professor Jeffrey Smith of Kansas describes why the members of the expedition covered themselves with lard, how they treated their epidemic of boils, the joys and frustrations of a daily diet of mountain roots and many, many more exciting aspects of the expedition that adults are too uptight to discuss.  Call for reservations.  $2 per student.

Professor Smith will present a more refined and dignified program for adults on May 19 at 7pm at the Pierre Chamber.  He will portray Captain Clark in a retrospective look back at the Expedition and the times following it.  The program is entitled "On the Porch with William Clark."

●  EVERY TUESDAY IN MAY:  ENCOUNTERS, ESCAPES AND ESCAPADES

Lonis Wendt, historian, storyteller and scholar, will conduct programs for any interested groups, youth or adult on the exciting times experienced by the members of the Corps of Discovery.

Wendt specifically addresses the South Dakota encounters. Programs can be tailored for any age group.  Call for reservations. Wendt is also available to travel to your school, library or community event as well.

*These programs are made possible with support from the SD Humanities Council and the Encounters on the Prairie Chapter of the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation.
