Five school health workshops set for summer; training available on request

Five workshops will be offered by the Coordinated School Health program, a collaborative effort between the SD Departments of Education and Health, during the summer months.  In addition, schools may contact the program regarding special training needs; personnel will look for ways to assist schools with their requests.  A minimum of 60 days prior notice is necessary for special-request training.

Descriptions of the five events planned for summer and fall are:

Developing the Health Literate Child-Health Education Standards and Assessment Training*

Critical thinkers, responsible citizens, self-directed learners and effective communicators: these are all characteristics of a health literate child.  Learn how to develop these characteristics in your K-12 students by using the SD Health Education Standards.  During 4-hour and 6-hour workshops, participants will learn about standards implementation.  In the 15-hour course, participants will also see the importance of aligning standards, assessment, and instructional activities as well as differentiating between assessment for the purpose of accountability and assessment for the purpose of instructional improvement.  Contact Kari Senger, Department of Education, (605) 773-6808 or kari.senger@state.sd.us .  Summer and fall training dates and locations are posted on the Coordinated School Health web site: http://www.state.sd.us/deca/cscf/schoolhealth/ .

HIV/AIDS Training

We can no longer remain complacent and think "HIV/AIDS won't happen here.  Not in my state, not in my town."  We must recognize how truly mobile the population is and the implications for our communities.  Education is the key to preventing HIV/AIDS.  This workshop focuses on basic HIV/AIDS information and/or teaching strategies.  It is appropriate for teachers, counselors, nurses, administrators, parents, and support staff in grades K-12. It is offered as a 4-hour or 6-hour training. Contact April Sitzler, Department of Education, (605) 773-6898 or april.sitzler@state.sd.us .  Summer and fall training dates and locations are posted on the Coordinated School Health web site: http://www.state.sd.us/deca/cscf/schoolhealth/ .

Are you uncomfortable dealing with parents who are upset that you are teaching sex-ed to their children? This innovative training will answer these questions and give strategies and lesson ideas for teaching students will special needs about human sexuality and HIV/AIDS education. It will also highlight the importance of teaching sexual education, laws and regulations, ways to handle parent and community pressure and student sexual needs in the classroom. Life Skills Training*

The Life Skills training program is a proven, highly effective, substance abuse prevention program.  It is designed to: provide students with the necessary skills to resist social pressures to smoke drink and use drugs; help them develop greater self-esteem, self-mastery, and self-confidence; enable children to effectively cope with social anxiety; and increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance use.  The elementary version is for implementation in grades 3-4-5 or 4-5-6 and it consists of eight lessons for each of the three years.  The middle school version is for implementation in grades 6-7-8 or 7-8-9 and it consists of 15 lessons the first year, 10 lessons the second year and 5 lessons the third year.  Trainings are currently scheduled for Pierre, Rapid City, and Brookings. Contact Kari Senger, Department of Education, (605) 773-6808 or kari.senger@state.sd.us .  Summer and fall training dates and locations are posted on the Coordinated School Health web site: http://www.state.sd.us/deca/cscf/schoolhealth/ .

Reducing the Risk Curriculum Training*

In order to lower the rate of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases we need to educate students about abstinence, use of protective measures, recognizing sexual pressure, self-advocacy and refusal skills. This 15-hour training outlines the nationally-recognized Reducing the Risk curriculum. This curriculum was named by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Series Administration (SAMHSA) as a “Model Program.” This evidence-based curriculum is designed to build skills in students that will help in the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. Strong Foundation, Strong Curriculum, Strong Bodies: Standards-Based Physical Education*

A quality physical education program is based on standards that define what students should know and be able to do as well as the levels of achievement that students are expected to attain.  SD Physical Education
