Districts to receive preliminary AYP determination*
Districts will receive preliminary determination on their adequate yearly progress (AYP) for 2005 around July 18. The preliminary determination – for districts and schools – will be mailed along with a disk containing all student and assessment data from 2004 and 2005.
Districts will have until Aug. 3, 5 p.m. (CDT), to review and make any necessary changes to their data. Changes must be made directly on DDN Campus or SIMSNet. A final AYP determination will be made Aug. 8. An e-mail, sent to all superintendents, will alert districts that final determinations are available online via the state’s 2005 Report Card. The online notification will be followed by a notification by mail several days later.
“We hope by giving superintendents a heads-up on when the information is coming that they can plan accordingly,” said Dr. Rick Melmer, secretary of the South Dakota Department of Education. “If a superintendent is not available on crucial dates around July 18 and Aug. 8, he or she could plan to have another administrator watch for the AYP information.”
The department also will have staff available at the annual Superintendents Conference in mid-July, to answer questions about the preliminary determinations.
An estimated timeline* for the AYP notification process follows:
July 15 Department of Education mails data disk and preliminary AYP status to all district superintendents
July 19-21 Department of Education staff available to answer questions regarding AYP status at annual Superintendents Conference
Aug. 3 Deadline for districts/schools to make changes to student data via DDN Campus/SIMSNet
Aug. 8 Department of Education e-mails all district superintendents final AYP determination with mailed version to follow
Aug. 8-9 2005 Report Card information released to media
Aug. 22 Deadline for districts/schools to appeal AYP determination
Oct. 3 Deadline for Department of Education to respond to all appeals
*This timeline assumes that all programming runs smoothly. If there are changes, the department will alert superintendents via e-mail.
