"I believe that all children can learn if given the support, time, and
proper instruction and guidance. As I was weeding my garding this summer, I
was thinking about how some teachers identify certain students as "weeds,"
sometimes even before the student has stepped into their classroom. These
students may be disruptive, be on an IEP, have ADD, not have good hygiene,
or had a less than productive sibling. As educators, we need to see all
children as wonderful seeds. If we care for and nurture seeds, they will
grow into glorious, productive plants. Our students can turn out the same
way if we care for and nurture them too. It is all in the perspective we
take. We would never say to a child who gives us a bouquet of dandelions,
"those are just weeds!" We would say, "What beautiful flowers!" and treat
them as such! To truly make a difference and change lives, I believe we must
create a safe, caring atmosphere where all children feel welcome and cored
for. What makes me an outstanding teacher is that I treat all students with
respect and dignity. I show them that I care about them as a person, and I
truly care about their well-being. For students to achieve a certain
proficiency level, they first must feel safe, secure, and welcome.
[As a teacher I] encourage teachers, parents, and communities to embrace our
youth and realize that all we do concerning our students has a ripple effect
not only for the present generation and moment, but for generations to come.
We must meet each challenge and goal with an undying energetic, positive
attitude that will not waiver. We must be mindful of the positive impact
that we as educators can have on the youth we come in contact with everyday,
and do whatever it takes to build relationships and demonstrate the
potential that lies in each of them. Through our actions and words we can
influence the future of our communities, our nation, and our world by
helping to shape the young people of this country."
