This program area is administered cooperatively by the Office of Accreditation and Teacher Quality, the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety Driver Licensing Office. Rules set by the South Dakota Board of Education govern construction of the school bus body, chassis and operational procedures. Requirements found in Chapter 32-32-1 through 32-32-16 of South Dakota Codified Law pertain to school buses, motorist responsibilities near school buses and special equipment requirements.
Accreditation and Teacher Quality has contracted with School Bus, Inc out of Sioux Falls to manage the busing concerns, training, state and federal regulations and other issues pertaining to school buses (see School Bus Procedures). The South Dakota Highway Patrol handles school bus safety inspections and enforcement functions. The Driver Licensing Office tests school bus driver applicants and issues a driver’s license. |
