The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

NAEP The Nation's Report CardWelcome to the State of South Dakota's NAEP website. NAEP, often referred to as "the Nation's Report Card", is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subjects. Its two major goals are to measure student achievement and to report change in performance over time. NAEP provides results for the nation as a whole and for the states individually. Performance is reported by groups of students, e.g. aggregated scores, by gender, by different racial and ethnic groups, and by participation of special programs. NAEP does not provide results for individual students or for their schools.

NAEP 2007 will assess reading, mathematics, and writing in grades 4, 8 and 12.  The assessment will be administered January 22 through March 2, 2007. A sample of South Dakota schools will be selected statewide and from these schools a sample of students will be selected at grades 4 and 8.  The state NAEP writing assessment is voluntary and South Dakota will not participate. However, a few students will be selected to participate in the national writing assessment grade 8 and 12. Overall, there will be approximately 2500-3000 students selected per grade, per subject area, with a much smaller sample drawn at grade 12.

Students are asked to participate in only one subject.  All subjects require 90 minutes of student time (includes instructions and the distribution and collection of materials). NAEP field staff is responsible for all aspects of the test administration.  NAEP assessment coordinators will work with school personnel to arrange test times and coordinate the assessment.
