The State Department of Education (DOE) provides support and
professional development opportunities to teachers of K-12
mathematics throughout the state.
The South Dakota Mathematics Standards and Performance
Descriptors revision was accomplished by a committee of
approximately 50 K-16 educators. This document was approved by the
South Dakota Board of Education in May, 2004.
To support implementation of these revised standards, a
professional development course has been developed. This course is
based on the new mathematics standards and the process standards
established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)
in its Principles and Standards document.
Other projects to support mathematics education that are in
progress include
- field testing of performance tasks, and
- first year trials of course assessments for core high school
math subjects.
Both the tasks and course assessments have also been aligned to
the revised standards.
