Overview: Students learn about the history and culture of Mexico and its people. The influence of ancient, native civilizations and the Spanish are explored through the art of the mask.

Social Studies Standards
1-2

Goal 1 – History
Students will understand the emergence and development of civilizations and cultures over time.

Indicator 1:  Evaluate the significance of interactions among cultures and civilizations and the impact on cultural diffusion.

Second Grade

  1. recognize that members of a group share beliefs, attitudes, and values.

Communication/Language Arts Standards
1-2

Goal – Listening and Viewing
Students will use critical listening and viewing skills in various situations and for a variety of purposes.

Indicator 1:  Students will use various listening and viewing strategies in social, academic, and occupational situations.

Grade 1

  1. follow two or three step oral directions.
  2. recognize and demonstrate the importance of focusing on the speaker when listening.
  3. use appropriate volume and tone of voice when interacting with others.
  4. summarize what others say with courtesy and respect.

Grade 2

  1.  follow three and four step oral directions.
  2. observe and note the gestures and facial expressions used by the speaker.
  3. use appropriate words and expressions when responding to the actions or statements of others.

Goal 3 – Listening and Viewing
Students will use critical listening and viewing skills in various situations and for a variety of purposes.

Indicator 3: Students will utilize various strategies retain/retrieve critical oral and visual information.

Grade 1

  1. ask appropriate questions to clarify information.
  2. restate information in a sequence similar to how it was presented, e.g., simple directions.

Grade 2

  1. ask different types of questions for different purposes, e.g., directions, clarification.

SD Content Standards: Visual Arts

STANDARD ONE:

Students will understand and use visual arts as means for creative self-expression and interpersonal communication.

BENCHMARKS:

3-4 Students will:

  1. Describe how visual arts tell stories or express moods or ideas*.

5-8 Students will:

  1. Express personal ideas, experiences, or emotions through various media, processes, and techniques.

STANDARD TWO:

Students will understand the media, techniques and processes used in the production of visual arts.

3-4 Students will:

  1. Understand selected techniques which give artwork detail.

STANDARD THREE:

Students will understand the relationship between visual arts and history, culture, and society.

3-4 Students will:

  1. Describe the functions and uses of visual arts in a variety of cultures and societies.

5-8 Students will:

  1. Investigate ways the visual arts reflect and influence the culture and societies in which they were created.

STANDARD FOUR:

Students will demonstrate a capacity for critical and sensitive response to various visual arts experiences.

3-4 Students will:

  1. Explain likes and dislike for various works of art.

5-8 Students will:

  1. Determine the quality and effectiveness of personal artwork using specific criteria.
