Overview: Today, you, your family, teachers, and friends receive different, many times, conflicting, nutritional and dietary advice from health professionals, the media, and advertising. A number of significant advances have been made in the understanding of how diet and nutrition relate to both a person’s wellness as well as to chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cancer. People are often uninformed about effective diet and nutritional approaches to these diseases. This distance learning interactive presentation will teach you principles of nutrition and how to apply these principles for improving the nutritional status of you and your family. Dr. Bill will present basic as well as practical approaches to nutrition. The goals of this course are fourfold; 1) To make you aware of the latest nutritional recommendations as put forth by the major health organizations in the United States, such as the USDA, The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Institute, The American Dietetic Association, The American Dental Association, and The American Diabetes Association, 2) To give you tools to discriminate between evidence-based nutritional and dietary advice and non-evidence-based advice, 3) To give you hints to allow you to implement sound and effective changes in your diet, and 3) To teach you how to evaluate if you have been successful at following these guidelines. Distance Learning Presenter Dr Bill (alias, Dr. Warren B. Karp, Ph.D., D.M.D.) is Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pediatrics, Oral Biology and Oral Diagnosis at The Medical College of Georgia in the Medical School, the Dental School, and the School of Graduate Studies. He has a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry from The Ohio State University (1970) and a Doctorate in Dental Medicine from The Medical College of Georgia (1977). He is an elected member of The American Institute of Nutrition (Federation of Societies of Experimental Biology), The American Society of Clinical Nutrition and is past president of the Georgia Nutrition Council. He has won numerous regional, state, and national awards for his teaching ability and is peer reviewer for national and international scientific journals. He has published over 100 scientific papers and abstracts in the area of nutrition and dietetics. Dr. Bill is a very interactive speaker and you should have time to interact with him during this program.
