Overview: Dr. Miriam Leiva will present a
dynamic discussion giving specific strategies to help your students
read, reason, and solve problems including applications and
non-routine problem solving.
Dr. Leiva has been a teacher of mathematics for over 30 years at all
levels, K-12 and university. She says, "What I consider most
important about myself is that I AM A TEACHER. I love my profession
and my students. I have dedicated my professional life to
mathematics education and to the professional development of
teachers, in-service and preservice."
Dr. Leiva is Distinguished Professor of Mathematics (Emerita) at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she directs MATHink
and Project Excel MATH, nationally funded programs that link
teachers to improve teaching and learning K through -12 and the
universities where teachers are prepared.
Dr. Leiva has served as Director of the Teacher Preparation Program
at the National Science Foundation, on the Board of Directors at the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, on the US National
Committee on Mathematics Instruction, and on the Committee on the
Mathematics Education of Teachers of the Mathematics Association of
America. She has lead NC Mathematics Curriculum Committee since
1980, and she currently chairs the NCTM Professional Development
Academy Services. Miriam's work has been widely recognized, and she
has received the Rankin Award for contributions to mathematics
education in North Carolina and the Bank of America Teaching
Excellence Award.
She edited and co-authored 11 books of the NCTM ADDENDA Project, to
illustrate the NCTM Standards. Miriam has made hundreds of
presentations nationally and internationally, and she has written
for publication both in journals and books. She is senior author of
both an elementary (HM Mathematics) and a secondary mathematics
textbook series (McDougal Little Explorations and Applications)
