SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS
K-2
Goal 1-History
Students will
understand the emergence and development of civilizations and cultures over
time and place.
Indicator 1: Analyze the chronology of
various historical eras to determine connections and cause/effect
relationships.
Grade Level Standards
Kindergarten:
- recognize characteristics of American leaders through exposure to biographies of important people of our past, such as George Washington,
Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks.
First Grade:
-
identify through biographies
and stories the admirable deeds performed by past leaders such as Helen
Keller, Ben Franklin, Martin Luther King, Clara Barton, Alexander Graham
Bell, Thomas Edison, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.
Indicator 2: Evaluate the influence of
varying values and philosophies on the development of civilization and
cultures.
Grade Level Standards
Kindergarten:
- connect people and events honored in commemorative holidays, including
Native American Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Martin
Luther King Day, Presidents’ Day, and Memorial Day.
First Grade:
- identify through
biographies and stories the admirable deeds performed by past leaders, such

Goal 3-Civics
(Government)
Students will understand the historical development and
contemporary role of governmental power and authority.
Indicator 1: Analyze the various forms
and purposes of government in relationship to the needs of individuals and
societies.
Grade Level Standards
Kindergarten:

discuss the attributes of a good citizen with
emphasis on trust, respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring.
First Grade:
-
recognize attributes and consequences of citizenship
that apply to family, school, and community units, such as respecting roles
of authority, following rules created for the protection of all, and
accepting consequences of rules.
Second Grade:
-
recognize that laws are
needed in a community.
-
discuss the lawmaking process and
how leaders work together.
-
recognize that there are legal
consequences for lawbreakers.
Indicator 2: Evaluate the impact of
historical events, ideals, and documents on the formation of the United
States government.
Grade Level Standards
First Grade:

recognize political roles of leaders in the larger
community, such as the mayor, the governor, the legislators, the
congressmen, senators, and the president.
Indicator 3: Analyze the constitutional
rights and responsibilities of United States citizens.
Grade Level Standards
Kindergarten:
- recognize the important actions
required in demonstrating citizenship: respecting roles of members and
leaders in a group; sharing responsibilities in a group; identifying ways
to help others; respecting the individual right to express an opinion; and
acknowledging that people think and act differently.
First Grade:
- distinguish the qualities of
citizenship.
- compare rules in different groups for
different situations, such as family, school, and community.

for a variety of purposes.
Indicator 4: Students will access,
synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of sources.
Grade Level Standards
Kindergarten:

First Grade:

explain the difference between fantasy and
reality in print materials

Second Grade:

Use the writing process to generate various
forms of writing, e.g., notes, letters, stories.

to clarify and enhance understanding of information.
