Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Literature Links: Out of the Dust: This unit will seek to integrate technology and literature through the use of Karen Hesse's Out of the Dust. This book is set in the Great Depression era, and the family in the center of the book is experiencing difficulties due to the Dust Bowl storms.

Visions In the Dust: A Child's Perspective of the Dust Bowl: Using Karen Hesse’s Newbery Award-winning Out of the Dust as an introduction to this aspect of the Great Depression, students have the opportunity to identify with the personal experiences of youth in the 1930s. In addition, students examine primary source materials of the period to correlate the fictional text with actual visual, auditory, and manuscript accounts as found in the American Memory collections.

Out of the Dust:  In this WebQuest you will select a journal entry from Out of the Dust and use it to create a newspaper for the date given in the selected journal. 

Out of the Dust Assignment: Using fact and pictures to better understand the setting and emotions of Out of the Dust.

Teaching Unit: This unit, developed by teacher Isabel Hearn, seeks to integrate technology with social studies and literature. The students will become familiar with the historical events surrounding the story including the Dust Bowl, Great Depression, New Deal, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Dustbowl Web Quest: WebQuest for 5th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies in which students select a journal entry from Out of the Dust and use it to create a newspaper for the date given in the selected journal.
