Types of Whales
These lessons are to be used with first graders at the beginning of the school year or with kindergarten students during the second semester. Students will be able to identify different whales, that they are mammals, and classify them into two groups: baleen and toothed whales. This lesson is part of the Science Unit but also incorporates language arts, mathematics and social studies. Materials include KWL charts, drawings to complete, and an extensive bibliography of related literature.

Exploring Whales
This site will be used in a thematic unit about whales. Student will work independently and in small groups to learn about the different species of whales, whale anatomy, where whales are in the world, the careers related to whales, the types of whales that are currently on the endangered species list, and why those whales are becoming endangered.

Whales
This unit was chosen because it allows the students to learn the characteristics of whales. The unit will allow the students to visualize the size of various whales and how the whale's blubber layer and body shape helps the whale to maintain their body heat in near freezing water. The unit will also allow the students to compare the characteristics of whales to fish.

World Of Whales
This site provides information for teachers and students about whales and how they live. There are many pictures of whales in their natural environment and also recorded songs of the whales. This site would be useful for teachers to plan lessons with and students to conduct projects about whales.

Whales

Our goal was to integrate science, mathematics, geography, art, and language.
