Goal 2 – PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Students will use appropriate scientific models to describe and quantify the nature and interactions of matter and energy.

Indicator 1:  Describe the structures and properties of matter in various states and forms.

Grade Level Standards

Third Grade:

     1.  describe physical properties of objects.

     2.  relate composition to physical properties.

     3.  use appropriate technology to investigate and understand that objects are
          made of smaller parts.

Fourth Grade:

     1.  describe ways in which the properties of matter may vary.  (example:
          solubility, density, baking soda interaction with vinegar)

     2.  explain how physical properties remain the same as the mass is changed.
          (example:  block of salt will taste the same as a grain of salt) 

Goal 5 – SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY

Students will identify and evaluate the relationships and ethical implications of science, upon technology, environment, and society. 

Indicator 1:  Analyze various implications/effects of scientific advancement within the environment and society.

          bases, salts, organic, inorganic, solids, liquids, and gases) 

Indicator 4:  Analyze various interactions of energy and matter.

     2.  identify types of energy transformations.  (example:  mechanical to

          theories, hypotheses, and/or explanations about a specific topic.

     3.  analyze how new discoveries may either modify existing theories or result
          in establishing a new paradigm.

     6.  analyze how new knowledge and methods emerge from investigations
          and from public communication among scientists. 

Indicator 2:  Demonstrate understanding and use a variety of processes for scientific investigations.

     1.  apply basic science process skills.  (example:  observing, classifying,

          data.

     8.  use safe and effective laboratory techniques.

Indicator 1:  Understand the fundamental structures, functions, and mechanisms found in living things.

          tissues, organs, and systems.
