Health Science Programs
Health Science programs for
secondary students in high schools and multi-districts are intended to
expose the student to health careers through job shadowing and related
classroom experiences. Students also have an opportunity to learn health
care skills, such as, basic nursing, medical terminology, medication
administration and first aid/CPR. The program content may be articulated
to health programs in technical institutes.
Health Science programs prepare individuals for employment or
advancement in the health career fields. The programs assist students in
developing an understanding of the core knowledge and skills that health
professionals need.
While enrolled in Health Science programs, students will:
- identify the academic subject matter that requires proficiency
within their area and use this knowledge as needed
- develop communication skills to effectively communicate orally and
in writing
- understand the various roles of health care professionals and where
they fit into the overall health care environment
- demonstrate skills that enhance their employment opportunities and
job satisfaction
- identify the legal responsibilities, limitations and implications of
their actions within the health care setting
- develop an understanding of the accepted ethical practices within
the health care environment
- apply safe work practices and follow health and safety policies and
procedures
- interact with other health care workers while identifying the
various roles necessary for an effective health care team
- understand the fundamentals of wellness and the prevention of the
disease processes.
The Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) associated with
Health Occupations is SkillsUSA. Students actively involved in
SkillsUSA have an opportunity to develop leadership and citizenship
qualities. Students enrolled in Health Science programs at both the secondary
and postsecondary level have the opportunity to become members.
