Ground Beef from Westland Meat Company Recalled
MEDIA ADVISORY
2/19/2008
- On Sunday, Feb. 17, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture announced that Hallmark/Westland Meat
Company voluntarily recalled 143 million pounds of ground beef
that originated at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Company plant.
Some of this meat was used for school nutrition programs around
the country, including South Dakota. No illnesses have been
linked to the recalled meat, and officials said the health
threat was likely small.
- On Monday, Feb. 18, the South
Dakota Department of Education's Child and Adult Nutrition
Services notified school food authorities that the beef, which
had previously been on administrative hold, was recalled.
- Later today, school food
authorities in South Dakota will be notified of the proper
procedures for destroying the ground beef involved in the
recall. The recalled meat must be destroyed following strict
USDA procedures.
- South Dakota has received
USDA donated beef from Westland Meat Company for two years. It
is likely that almost every school food authority has received
USDA donated beef from Westland Meat Company over that time.
To date, 121 out of 220 school food authorities in South Dakota
that receive commodities have reported that they still have some
of the recalled beef on hand (current estimate 650 cases at
40 pounds per case statewide).
- To date, there have been no
reports of illness in South Dakota school systems related to
this product.
- For more information about
this recall, visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Web site
at www.usda.gov.
- South Dakota school food
authorities with questions should contact Child and Adult
Nutrition Services at (605) 773-3413. Information is also posted
on the Department of Education's Web site
www.doe.sd.gov.
