'3-A-DAY' CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY DAIRY COUNCIL

An exciting new program, 3-A-Day of Milk, Cheese or Yogurt for Strong Bones, has been launched by the National Dairy Council and Midwest Dairy Council to encourage people to consume at least three servings of milk, cheese or yogurt a day to combat calcium shortages among Americans.

You may be familiar with the 5-A-Day program encouraging people to eat more fruits and vegetables.  While the two campaigns are not related, they both are intended to make a positive difference in the health of Americans by helping them follow the dietary guidelines.

Milk, cheese and yogurt are the only food products that will carry the 3-A-Day of Dairy logo, and all are readily available in non-fat and low-fat varieties.  Products that carry the logo must provide at least 20 percent of the Daily Value of calcium.

According to the Dairy Council, scientific evidence supports the healthful role of dairy confirming it’s importance in developing strong bones, controlling blood pressure and contributing to dental health.  According to USDA data, 75 percent of Americans do not meet their calcium requirements.  The 3-A-Day campaign will help Americans make smart food choices that are consistent with the dietary guidelines.
