CANS CELEBRATES SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK
Child and Adult Nutrition Services celebrated National Nutrition Month and National School Breakfast Week by hosting a typical school breakfast for a targeted audience of adults on March 7th. The selected adults were excited to be on the invitation list and admitted they were really looking forward to their breakfast. The point was, “…if you can get this excited to have breakfast, can you imagine what breakfast means to the average school child?” Each guest passed by a food table that started out with a colorful paper breakfast bag for them to carry their selected breakfast items to their table in. At each place setting was set a colorful placemat with this year’s logo, “Make Your Morning Count.” The placemat had a score card to rate their own typical breakfast. Some guests realized they could be doing a better job with their daily food choices and intently listened to the success stories CANS shared with them regarding how important breakfast is in the life of a child. We shared some SD success stories. Each breakfast bag was pre-packed with a colorful brochure that gave additional breakfast program information and some free goodies like bookmarks, magnets, etc. The room was decorated by using the large “Got Milk” banners that were distributed by the Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP) which were designed to promote milk consumption among tweens/teens. Don’t be too surprised if someone at your school comes up to you with the wrapper from the commodity peanut butter-jelly sandwich and asks you, “How can my children get these sandwiches for school breakfast?” Some of the guests were carefully folding up the wrapper and asked us this question. We told them to go to their local food service program personnel. CANS
