![]() Verification Deadline is December 15th Annually, each School Food Authority (SFA), operating the child nutrition programs must select and verify a sample of applications approved for benefits. SFA’s must use either a “random” sampling or “focused” sampling method to select applications to be verified. The required sample size is based on: 1. the total number of approved applications on file on October 31, and 2. whether the SFA employs random or focused sampling for selecting the applications to be verified. NOTE: An application is counted as one application regardless of whether it is a multi-child application or an application for one child. The sample size depends on the number of paper applications, not the number of children represented on the application. NOTE: Direct certification eligibles are not included in the verification process. NOTE: Verification cannot be done before an application is approved under any circumstance. Approval must be based solely on information provided in the application. NOTE: The SFA must have on file the completed Verification Summary page. A prototype for the summary page can be found in NSLP Memo #51. This will be reviewed during a Coordinated Review Effort program review. NOTE: Some schools will be randomly selected to submit their Verification Summary page into CANS to ascertain the verification process is being completed in South Dakota’s SFA’s. For further information on verification refer to the USDA Eligibility Guidance for School Meals, 1991, manual.
