Tidbits From Sandra

Are we in a routine or are we in a rut?  Sometimes we have to stop and look at what we do and why and reach out to try something new.  The routine of our center or school opening again, arriving at work on time, having meals ready when they are supposed to be are all routines that we need to maintain.  The rut might come in what we are serving – “we’ve always had that combination”, “we’ve never served that menu item”, “kids will never eat that”.  Sometimes we make a decision about a meal based on our likes and dislikes rather than having the children taste something and tell us what they’d like.  Be daring!  Try some new combinations, offer some choices, encourage fruit and vegetable consumption!

School Lunch Week this month is a great time to celebrate.  Each school was sent a packet chock full of ideas.  Share an idea with the teachers.  Surely one activity will work for you. Share your fun times with us.

Reauthorization of the child nutrition programs is in progress at the national level.  We haven’t seen much action on that lately but likely it will be heating up soon.  You can check on progress at asfsa.org.  Locally there has been a lot of work as the Association gathered support for a resolution to eliminate the reduced price category by raising the income eligibility guidelines and moving families into the free category.  The number of these resolutions will help our congressional group know how South Dakotans feel about the proposal.

Progress always involves risk; you can’t steal second base and leave your foot on first.  - - Frederick Wilcox.
