
Child and Adult Nutrition Services
(CANS), within the SD Department of Education, has been awarded a
Team Nutrition grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA). CANS has received a Team Nutrition grant every other year
since 1995. The grant will run from September 30, 2007 through
September 30, 2009 and is for $193,311. Some of the activities of
the grant will include:
- Mini-grants for schools,
after school programs, summer food programs and preschool
programs that participate in USDA child nutrition programs
- Training for child nutrition
agencies via the Dakota Digital Network to teach child nutrition
program staff topics related to the Dietary Guidelines (2 hours
once a month from January through April of 2008 and 2009)
- A Power Panther Tour in the
fall of 2008 to promote nutrition and physical activity in
schools and preschools across South Dakota. Short educational
programs will be made at sites around the state using USDA’s
mascot.
- A contest for high school
students and school staff to design bulletin boards promoting
fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and physical activity
- Developing an educational
component for after school programs
- Develop a curriculum for
teaching summer food providers how to meet the dietary
guidelines when planning menus
- A partnership with South
Dakota Public Broadcasting in which Buddy will promote nutrition
and physical activity using materials from USDA and the CANS
office
- A Healthy Schools and
Communities workshop in June 2009 for school wellness teams
- Workshops held in various
regions of the state for child nutrition program staff led by
National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) staff from
the University of Mississippi on topics to help staff meet the
Dietary Guidelines for Americans
