Aligning Health
and Reading with a HEAP of Books
October 25-26, 2007, Comfort Inn, Mitchell , SD
You know how important health education is for
your students. But it is no secret that there
just isn’t enough time for it. The Aligning
Health and Reading with a HEAP of Books
training is the practical solution for
elementary and secondary teachers, school
counselors, nurses and many others for getting
it all done in the little time you have.
The Aligning Health and Reading with a HEAP
of Books training is designed to help
teachers make connections between the health
knowledge and skills their students should
achieve in order to become health literate and
the books they integrate into their daily
lessons on reading and writing.
The training will be held at the Comfort Inn,
2020 Highland Way, Mitchell, SD from 8:30- 4:00
p.m. on October 25-26, 2007. Participants will
be eligible to receive one graduate credit
through Black Hills State University for $40.00
and one Department of Education Teacher Renewal
Credit at no charge. Participants may also take
the course for no credit.

Health Education Standards and Assessment Online Training
Coordinated School Health will be offering an
on-line training of the South Dakota Health
Education Standards and Assessment. The training
will be held over a four week period beginning
November 1, 2007 and ending on November 30,
2007. For more information about the course

The
South Dakota Health Education Standards and
Assessment Training is designed to provide
participants with information and skill-building
opportunities related to South Dakota’s health
education standards and assessment.
Participants will explore the health education
standards, including the core concepts and skill
categories. They will learn to align standards,
assessment and instructional activities, as well
as, obtain practice in scoring student’s work.
Participants will learn to differentiate between
assessment for the purpose of accountability and
assessment for the purpose of instructional
improvement.
This training is appropriate for elementary
teachers, curriculum directors, health education
teachers, administrators, school counselors,
school nurses, parents, and other interested
individuals.
Approval has been granted for one hour of
graduate or undergraduate credit or for one
Department of Education Certificate Renewal
Credit. The course may also be taken for no
credit.

LifeSkills
Training – November 28-29, Sioux Falls
Lifeskills Training is a proven, highly
effective, substance abuse prevention program.
The training is recommended for Teachers,
Counselors, Prevention Advocates, Safe & Drug
Free School Coordinators and School Nurses and
is designed to:

provide students with the necessary
skills to resist social pressures to
smoke, drink, and use drugs;
-
help students develop greater
self-esteem, self-mastery, and
self-confidence;
-
enable students to effectively cope with
social anxiety; increase students
knowledge of the immediate consequences
of substance abuse.
Approval has been granted for one hour of
graduate or undergraduate credit or for one
Department of Education Certificate Renewal
Credit. The course may also be taken for no

Physical
Education Curriculum Anaylsis Tool (PECAT)
Pre-Convention Workshop
Register today for the annual Health, Physical
Education, Recreation, Dance convention November
1-2, 2007 in Aberdeen SD. The pre-convention is
a Physical Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (PECAT)
workshop designed to help teachers analyze their
physical education curriculum which begins at
1:00 p.m. on Wed. October 31.This is free
workshop if you are attending the convention!

The opening session for the convention will be
at 6:00 p.m. October 31 followed by a social for
all. Thursday is a day full of sessions covering
a variety of topics. After the awards banquet, a
social gathering at the local bowling alley will
round out a busy day. Sessions will continue
Friday until 1:00p.m. The featured speaker for
this convention is Robyn Starks Holcomb who is
the South Dakota Artist in Residence in dance.
She will be presenting sessions all day Thursday
and Friday morning on her topic "Athletic Art in
Motion". The opportunity to participate in
personal fitness testing will be available as
well as tours through the new technology fitness
lab on NSU campus. Door prizes and registration
gifts add to the learning, the networking. We
are also looking for members who are interested
