The School Health
Profiles is a biennial study conducted by the
South Dakota Department of Education to assess
the status of elementary and secondary school
health education curriculum and instruction as
well as school policies and practices related to
student health and wellness, physical education
, nutrition, tobacco prevention, and health
services within their schools. Data from the
Profiles can be very useful for improving a
school’s health program.
Questionnaires
were mailed to 1200 randomly selected elementary
and secondary public school principals and
teachers during the fall of 2005 with subsequent
follow-up mailings during the spring and summer
of 2006. Because the response rate for the
secondary principals and teachers were > 70%,
the results are weighted and are representative
of all regular public secondary schools in South
Dakota having at least one of grades 6 through
12.
