National Through with Chew Week/Great American Spit Out Day
South Dakota has one of the highest spit tobacco use rates in the nation – 14% of young adult males. We encourage you to promote National Through with Chew Week which is February 17 - 23, 2008 and the Great American Spit Out Day on Thursday, February 21st. Such efforts can reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and its negative affects on oral health. We believe that “teachable moments” are a unique opportunity to support students who are interested in quitting. Research of health professionals shows that even minimal interventions of less than three minutes increase tobacco cessation. You can direct tobacco users, including students, to the SD QuitLine, 1-866-737-8487, which provides tobacco cessation coaching, at no cost, along with free medications and at least doubles the participants likelihood of long-term success.

If you would like additional information about the QuitLine or to order free youth tobacco prevention materials including posters or brochures go to: http://doh.sd.gov/Tobacco
