School District Reorganization School
district reorganization is the process through which a school
district(s) in South Dakota is created, consolidated or dissolved.
There are two principle types. Most commonly, two or more districts
consolidate to create a new district. Less frequently, an existing
district dissolves and its land area is attached to one or more
existing school districts.
In 2007, legislation was passed that requires reorganization of a
school district when their K-12 enrollment drops to 100 or less
students and this school district is not identified as sparse. (SDCL
