Priority Area: Attendance
Chronic absence creates a significant barrier to students achieving college and career readiness. This is why the South Dakota Department of Education is making a concerted effort to support an increase in student attendance, especially in low-performing schools.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
- As part of a public service campaign, the Department of Education has partnered with South Dakota Public Broadcasting to create several ads promoting attendance awareness to be used during all major High School Activities Association sports tournaments.
In summer 2016, the department distributed a packet of communications resources about attendance awareness for school districts to utilize throughout the school year.
School districts have access to an Early Warning Report tool to help them identify attendance problems at the local level. The department has also provided training for school support staff to help address attendance issues.
