2011 Teacher of the Year:
Spotlight on outstanding teachers

Six candidates are in the running for the 2011 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced Oct. 14 at the Systems Change Conference in Chamberlain. (Click here to view short interviews with each.) District-level Teachers of the Year from across the state will be special guests at the banquet that night. In addition, the Department of Education has arranged for them to attend the conference at no cost.

The process for selecting the South Dakota Teacher of the Year begins each spring at the district level. Once you have selected your district’s Teacher of the Year, that person’s name should be forwarded on to your Education Service Agency, and a regional winner will be selected. These regional winners vie for the state Teacher of the Year honor.

Please consider participating in this important recognition program next year. It’s a way to celebrate, and elevate, the teaching profession. If your district’s Teacher of the Year is selected at the state level, she or he can expect great prizes and opportunities, including the chance to represent South Dakota at the national event in Washington, D.C.
