Lots of consideration surround science standards

You may have read last month about the final version of the Next Generation Science Standards release. South Dakota was one of the lead states, and Iím proud of all the educators and private industry experts across the state who were involved in the development process or provided feedback at some point or another.

The Department of Education will be conducting a thorough review of the finished product over the next several months, as we try to decide whether to move forward with adoption. There is a lot to consider, and certainly there are several merits to the NGSS and benefits should we choose to adopt them. However, we must examine all angles in deciding whether the NGSS is best for South Dakota.

I would encourage you to follow the process and weigh in when we begin asking for public comment. You can view the Next Generation Science Standards as finalized here.

Click here to read an Argus Leader article with more information on South Dakotaís role in development of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Also, as National Teacher Day approaches, I want to thank you and your certified staff for all the work you do throughout the year to foster positive outcomes for children across South Dakota. Effective teachers and administrators truly are critical to the success of our students.
