Training on new social studies standards to start in October
With the recent adoption of new social studies standards, the Department of Education is offering a variety of trainings throughout the 2015-16 school year. Teaching to the standards is to begin in the 2016-17 school year.

Blue Ribbon task force hears about funding and revenue possibilities
The Blue Ribbon Task Force met Oct. 1 and heard about potential funding formula changes and revenue possibilities. Meeting materials and audio are available on the task force website. The task force will submit a report of its recommendations to the Governor by Dec. 1.

Reminder: Complete data submission for PRF by Oct. 15
The Personnel Record Form, or PRF, is open. Districts are required to provide a variety of staffing information via this online tool. Accuracy of the data is very important and will be used for monitoring of Title I and Title III Programs, Special Education IDEA, school accreditation and other programs. The deadline to submit PRF data is Oct. 15.

Fall assessment roadshow coming up Oct. 19-23
These statewide one-day workshops will provide all public school districts and participating non-public schools with information needed for planning all required 2015-16 assessments. For each assessment, participants will receive a one-page document of high level details and next steps. Register at GoSignMeUp. Search for “Fall Assessment Workshop.”

School District Boundary Task Force drafts legislation
The School District Boundary Task Force has been asked to examine existing school district boundaries as well as recommend possible changes to those boundaries and a process for addressing minor boundary changes in the future. The task force has drafted legislation to revise the procedure for initiating a school district boundary change. It is now available for public comment.
Updated reporting requirements for districts available
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act requires school districts to publicly report accountability and assessment results for the district and each of its schools. Districts must also provide individual student results to parents. Here is a chart that details reporting requirements and deadlines.
DOE hosting K-16 Summit Oct. 14 in Chamberlain
No new teacher can be entirely prepared for the first day of school. Teacher prep and supports are key elements in developing successful teachers and retaining them in the profession. The K-16 Summit is designed to provide an opportunity for postsecondary and K-12 educators to learn and collaborate together. Here is an agenda and registration information for this free event.
Applications due Dec. 18 for Clean Diesel Grant Program funding
Applications are due Dec. 18 for funding under the South Dakota Clean Diesel Grant Program. The program provides funds to assist schools in purchasing new public school buses to replace old, high-emitting diesel school buses and to equip in-use diesel school buses with exhaust control retrofit devices.
Congratulations to South Dakota’s 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools
Kudos to All City Elementary (Sioux Falls) and Baltic Elementary schools! The U.S. Dept. of Education has named them National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2015 based on their overall academic excellence. These schools are among 285 public and 50 private schools nationwide that will be honored at a recognition ceremony Nov. 9-10 in Washington, D.C.
