IEP Process in Action
Sept. 2-Oct. 2, various locations statewide

This training is designed to provide an overview of criteria used in the special education process. Participants will review the special education process to think about how the whole team can be involved in the IEP process. Participants should bring a hard copy or a downloaded copy of the current IEP Technical Assistance Guide. Registration is limited to 50 participants.

IEP Back to Basics
Sept. 11, Sioux Falls
Sept. 24, Rapid City

This training is designed for teachers with less than three years of special education experience wanting to learn more about special education referral to placement. During this training, participants will review all of the forms as they follow the special education process from referral through consent, evaluation, eligibility, IEP development and parental prior written notice. Participants should bring a hard copy or a downloaded copy of the current IEP Technical Assistance Guide. Registration is limited to 50 participants.

Data Reporting – New Employee
Sept. 17 (10 a.m. CDT) & Sept. 18 (1:30 p.m. CDT), online

This 90-minute training is for district staff who have not previously been responsible for entering staffing information into the Personnel Record Form (PRF). This training will provide participants with an overview of the database and an understanding of the federal and state reporting requirements.

Participants will have the opportunity to view the correct method for entering data and receive tips on how to make this process go smoothly.

Participants are welcome to join one or both sessions. Both sessions will be recorded with the link available on the department website for those unable to attend at the scheduled times.

Data Reporting – Refresher Training
Sept. 17 (1:30 p.m. CDT) & Sept. 18 (9 a.m. CDT), online

This 60-minute training is developed for those who have previously used the Personnel Record Form (PRF) database and will provide participants with an overview of the data collection and information about common data encoding errors. Participants will also receive a preview of enhancements and changes to the database including:

1. Deploying a new report software
2. Determination of how to code special education and related services
3. Determination of how to code Title and intervention services
4. Coding of preschool teachers

Participants are welcome to join one or both sessions. Both sessions will be recorded with the link available on the department website for those unable to attend at the scheduled times.

Board of Education

Building Your School District’s Core ESL Program

Schools are invited to bring a team to one of three workshops being held across the state. Teams will get to work with a consultant who can help them build their Core ESL Program.

Northern Plains Law Conference on Students with Disabilities
Sept. 22-23, Rapid City

This is a new conference that will cover special education legal issues, including the latest information from due process hearings, circuit court cases, OSEP/OCR (Office of Special Education Programs/Office of Civil Rights) guidance letters, and basic IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) procedural requirements. It is designed for general/special education staff, administrators, state/school district attorneys, state education department staff, related services staff, parents and other stakeholders.

2015-2016 School Turnaround Kick Off
Oct. 5-6, Pierre

The South Dakota Department of Education is hosting a fall kick-off event for 2015-16 Focus and Priority schools at the Ramkota Conference Center in Pierre.

Sam Redding, from the Academic Development Institute, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Redding provides expertise in the areas of:

• School management
• Social and emotional learning
• Family-school relationships
• School improvement
• Factors that affect student learning

The Department of Education will sponsor all Focus and Priority schools to send a School Leadership Team to the kick-off to begin planning for the 2015-16 school year. For more information and to sign up, visit the event's registration page.

16th Annual Systems Change Conference
Oct. 14-16, Chamberlain

This year’s Systems Change Conference will be held at the Cedar Shore Resort in Chamberlain. This is one of the region’s premier professional development events for educators. On the evening of Oct. 15, the 2016 South Dakota Teacher of the Year will be announced during a special recognition banquet. Graduate credit and DOE contact hours are available.

The South Dakota Department of Education is offering this one-day training on the South Dakota Student Teacher Accountability and Reporting System (SD-STARS) to STARS Account Managers. The course will update participants on changes in the SD-STARS system and train them on understanding and using data for educational decisions. Participation is free. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time and will allow time for lunch.
