The Board of Education Standards recently held a first reading of proposed changes to state graduation requirements. The official public comment period on the related administrative rule changes is slated to open June 6 at rules.sd.gov (follow the “Department of Education” link). The board will hold a public hearing on the proposed rule changes at its July 16 meeting in Pierre.

2017-18 Report Card tentative timeline available
With the transition to the new Every Student Succeeds Act, the department will be creating and publishing a new Report Card. The amount of new data that will be included will push back the time of the data release.

Legislature studying Extraordinary Cost Fund this summer
The first meeting of the group studying the Extraordinary Cost Fund this summer is set for June 13 at 8:30 a.m. Find the agenda on the Legislative Research Council’s website. DOE staff and several school districts have been asked to present information at the meeting.

On May 11, Harrisburg High School’s career and technical education department celebrated 12 seniors’ commitment to become educators. Superintendent James Holbeck and several teachers spoke to the students about the vital role of an educator. The students signed a pledge dedicating themselves to the career. An archive of the Board of Education Standards’ May 8 meeting is available on the Board’s Meeting Archive webpage. The board approved the following Administrative Rule changes:
  • Changes to 24:43:02 will authorize DOE to equalize the distribution of accreditation reviews across a five-year time frame.
  • Changes to 24:55 will align language related to the state accountability system, performance goals, school classifications, and school support process with the state’s approved plan under the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Six South Dakota Workforce Education grants have been awarded to school districts and nonprofit entities. The purpose of the grant program is to provide the opportunity to make transformative change in career and technical education programs. Congratulations to these grantees!

South Dakota Board of Regents Board of Regents approves new instructional model for math

In an effort to improve student retention and graduation rates, a new instructional model for math has been approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents. By fall 2019, no public university student will be required to take traditional remedial math courses. The new ‘math pathways model’ is a result of a comprehensive review on how to improve student success in math at South Dakota public universities.

The Governor’s Advisory Panel for Children with Disabilities meets four times per year and advises the Office of Special Education Programs on a variety of topics. U.S. Ed. launches website accessibility technical assistance initiative

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has announced it is launching a new technical assistance initiative to assist schools, districts, state education agencies, libraries, colleges and universities in making their websites and online programs accessible to individuals with disabilities.
