SFAB to consider waiver applications Nov. 15
The School Finance Accountability Board will meet Nov. 15 in Pierre, with availability by teleconference, to consider waiver applications related to general fund cash balances. Districts that exceeded the allowable general fund cash balance cap received a letter from the Department of Education with information regarding the process for seeking a waiver from financial penalties.

Unpacked math and ELA standards now available
Unpacked, or disaggregated, math and English language arts content standards are now available on the Department of Education’s website. The templates for the unpacked standards are arranged by cluster/anchor standard and include the achievement level descriptors along with other key information.

Apply by Dec. 14 for Clean Diesel grants
The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources is accepting applications for funding under the South Dakota Clean Diesel Grant Program and the Volkswagen Mitigation Trust. The programs provide rebates to assist in purchasing new buses to replace old, high-emitting diesel buses.

Board Meeting grapic Board of Education Standards to meet Nov. 19 in Sioux Falls
State-level Report Card data will be shared at the Board of Education Standards meeting on Nov. 19. The second of four required public hearings on new world language and school library standards will be held, and there will be a discussion (first reading) of possible changes to current course equivalency rules.

CTE for Core Content applications updated; due Dec. 1

The CTE for Core Content application process for school districts has been revised to be more responsive to student need and the implications of the new graduation requirements. This work supports the philosophy behind the new requirements, which is about flexibility and relevance for students.

Verification of eligibility for free and reduced price meals based on applications must be conducted annually. Verification reports must be submitted via the iCAN system by Nov. 15. The English Learner Program Boot Camp is a webinar series that will cover 15 topics related to the education of ELs in South Dakota. The webinar series is scheduled for January through April 2019. Each webinar session will be about one hour in length with time for questions after each session.

Apprenticeship Summit scheduled for Nov. 13

The Department of Labor and Regulation will host the Start Today SD Summit to promote Registered Apprenticeships on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Mitchell Technical Institute. Businesses, apprenticeship sponsors, policy makers, and workforce and education professionals are invited to attend at no cost. Online registration is available on the Start Today SD website.

South Dakota ACT scores remain steady, above national average

South Dakota’s average ACT composite score is up slightly from 2017 and remains above the national average. South Dakota’s average ACT score for 2018 was 21.9, compared to the national average of 20.8 and last year’s statewide average of 21.8.

2018 Data Digest 2018 School Library Data Digest available

The 2018 School Library Data Digest is now available, with information about services, electronic resources, digital access, circulation, programming and more at school libraries across South Dakota. The School Library Data Digest is a compilation of data gathered via the annual school library survey distributed by the State Library to school districts every spring.
