Food service equipment grants awarded

Twenty South Dakota agencies and school districts have been awarded grants to upgrade or purchase new food service equipment through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. A total of $255,465 will be distributed.

“This is a win-win situation. Grant recipients will be able to use these funds to improve the quality of the meals they serve, and the newer equipment will result in better energy efficiency,” said Sandra Kangas, supervisor of the South Dakota Department of Education’s Child and Adult Nutrition Services.

Grant recipients will purchase or upgrade a variety of equipment, ranging from convection ovens to milk coolers.

The Department of Education received more than $2.1 million in grant requests. Federal guidelines give priority to applicants that serve significant numbers of students. In addition, priority was given to applicants serving populations in which at least 50 percent of participants are eligible for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program.
