Educators participate in Smarter Balanced Digital Library workshop

Since the fall of 2013, more than 40 South Dakota teachers have helped submit and review resources for the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. In July, 12 of these educators joined educators from across the country in Las Vegas for a resource review workshop.

Kristi Smith, a 5th and 6th grade teacher in the Colman-Egan School District, attended the July workshop. She likes that all of the resources in the Digital Library are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and contain one or more attributes of the formative assessment process.

“I definitely recommend the Digital Library to other South Dakota teachers,” says Smith. “All of the resources submitted were done by teachers for teachers. One of the best parts about the Digital Library is that it is free and easy for teachers to use. All the resources have undergone a rigorous review process, so teachers know they are receiving quality lessons and materials!”

Beginning this fall, the library will be available for all South Dakota K-12 teachers in public schools and participating non-public schools. Teachers will be able to download lesson plans, activities, professional development materials and more. Each district’s assessment coordinator will be the point of contact for the Digital Library and will set up teachers’ Digital Library accounts.

Training and videos will be available soon.

The Digital Library will be an online searchable library of high-quality vetted resources. It will be interactive and allow educators from Smarter Balanced member states to rate resources and collaborate. Tags will allow users to filter search results by standards, grade levels and other key topics.

Educators will be able to use these resources throughout the school year to do the following:

• Advance their use of formative assessment practices
• Gauge student understanding of lessons, concepts and
   Common Core State Standards
• Make quick adjustments to instruction
