Lutz selected as 2016 South Dakota Teacher of the Year


Sarah Lutz, a 3rd grade teacher at Stanley County Elementary School in Fort Pierre, has been selected as the 2016 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made earlier this month at a banquet at the Cedar Shore Conference Center in Oacoma.


Roosevelt High School teacher receives $25,000 Milken Educator Award


Gina Benz, an English teacher at Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, didn’t walk the red carpet, but she did receive a $25,000 award that Teacher magazine calls the “Oscar of Teaching.” Benz was recently surprised with a Milken Educator Award during a school assembly.




Training on new social studies standards to start in October


With the recent adoption of new social studies standards, the Department of Education is offering a variety of trainings throughout the 2015-16 school year. Teaching to the standards is to begin in the 2016-17 school year.



Science standards training available for up to 420 teachers

South Dakota recently adopted new science standards, and this online class will function as the first phase in standards implementation, serving up to 420 teachers.


Annual Indian Education Summit to be held in Pierre

The 2015 South Dakota Indian Education Summit will be held Nov. 1-3, at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel in Pierre. This 12th annual summit will include more than 60 specialized sessions, cultural activities and student-led discussions.


Blue Ribbon Task Force hears about funding and revenue possibilities

The Blue Ribbon Task Force met Oct. 1 and heard about potential funding formula changes and revenue possibilities. Meeting materials and audio are available on the task force website. The task force will submit a report of its recommendations to the Governor by Dec. 1.

Digging Deeper 2 scheduled for Nov. 20

Where do you and your students dig for primary sources? How can you and your students use these artifacts in your work? Join the South Dakota State Library and special guests for "Digging Deeper into Primary Sources," a free online learning program, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. CST.
