Social Studies Standards Implementation

With the recent adoption of new social studies standards, the Department of Education is offering trainings throughout the 2015-16 school year. Teaching to the standards is to begin in the 2016-17 school year.

Awareness trainings will provide an overview of the standards, background in the C3 Framework, inquiry in the classroom, the disaggregated templates and connections to the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings. These free trainings will be held statewide. Two self-paced online versions of these trainings are also scheduled.     – Oct. 28, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. CDT

Other opportunities will include in-depth online trainings in early spring 2016, which will build upon material from the fall trainings. These in-depth trainings will cover a longer time frame (a few months) as well as more specific material and engagement related to implementation. More details about these trainings will be sent out at a later date.

SD Science Online Modules: Vision for Science Education
Start date: Nov. 9

South Dakota recently adopted new science standards, and this online class will function as the first phase in standards implementation, serving up to 420 teachers. This is the only professional development on these standards that the Department of Education will offer during the 2015-16 school year.

The focus of this training will be on building awareness and foundational understanding of the vision for science education related to the new standards.

These graded online modules will allow participants to obtain either two college credits through USD at $40/credit OR two continuing education credits (30 hours) through the Department of Education for free. These modules will be facilitated by science teachers and instructional coaches and will rely on participants’ interaction and contributions in online discussions. An end-of-course survey will allow participants to provide feedback that will help the department determine future professional learning needs.

Note: All modules will be offered via Blackboard.k12.sd.us and will require the participant to have an @k12.sd.us email address. If needed, contact your school’s technology coordinator or the K12 Data Center to obtain one. After registering for the course, participants will receive access to the course and an introductory video explaining how to get into Blackboard and navigate through the course.

The South Dakota Board of Education will meet at Southeast Technical Institute, Mickelson Center Room 101, 2320 N. Career Ave., in Sioux Falls at 9 a.m. CST. An agenda will be posted on the Boards and Commissions portal at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting.
