Nearly 50 4th-8th grade educators from across South Dakota attended a foundational reading training in Pierre last month. This was the first time the Department of Education offered this training to teachers at these grade levels. The training focused on reading skills known as “the big five” (fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, phonemic awareness and phonics).

The Digital Library is an online repository of formative assessment resources available at no cost to all South Dakota public school teachers.

Proactive admissions initiative begins

This year, the state’s public universities and technical institutes have teamed up to offer eligible students guaranteed acceptance into their institutions. This initiative offers high school seniors guaranteed general admittance into any of the state’s six public universities and four technical institutes when they meet certain eligibility criteria.

The Systems Change Conference will be held Oct. 18-20 in Rapid City. The conference will lead off with a keynote presentation from Tony Frontier about Five Levers to Improve Learning, with these five levers serving as some of the strands for breakout sessions.
At a banquet Oct. 19, the 2018 State Teacher of the Year will be announced.

School libraries have an opportunity to join with thousands of other libraries and schools around the country to read the same book to as many kids as possible. This year’s selection is “Quackers” by Liz Wong. The South Dakota State Library has a limited number of free copies available for distribution.

The Legislative Research Council is looking for high school students interested in being a page during the 2018 legislative session. Students must be juniors or seniors (seniors are given preference), must be sponsored by a legislator and be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher is encouraged).

The State Library will host a webinar Oct. 5, at 3 p.m. MDT/4 p.m. CDT, on the World Book database, one of several databases provided by the State Library. Britney Lipton, World Book business development and training manager, will provide an overview of the World Book online collection, with an emphasis on how you can use it in your school.

2017 State Report Card available

The 2017 State Report Card is available by clicking on the “2017 Report Card” banner at doe.sd.gov. The Report Card uses several indicators to measure how schools are performing, including student achievement, academic growth, attendance rates, high school completion, and college and career readiness.
