TEACHER FEATURE: Teacher earns national recognition for class project

Deuel High School social studies teacher Matt Rosdahl recently received the Korean War Legacy Foundation Interview Initiative Scholarship, in recognition of a project his American history students completed. He was one of only three teachers nationwide to receive the scholarship.

Board adopts new educator certification rules

The South Dakota Board of Education has adopted new educator certification rules, overhauling the state’s current system. Among major areas of change is the creation of a new category of certificates, called educator permits. The process for alternative certification has also been revised and reciprocity rules have been updated.

SD Mentoring Program. Mentoring. Engage. Encourage. Empower.

Applications available for statewide mentoring program

The statewide mentoring program provides a first-year teacher access to a mentor teacher for a period of two years. Applications for new mentors are due May 1, and applications for new teachers are due June 16. Late hires will also have an opportunity to participate.

A new Personal Learning Plan tab on SDMyLife provides students a more comprehensive view of the career decision-making process, broken down into five clear steps. There is also a new resource for parents to help them support their child throughout the decision-making process.

The South Dakota Indian Education Summit will be held Sept. 24-26, in Pierre. Summit strands will focus on achievement, culture and language, success from within and building future leaders. Consider submitting a proposal to present.

In April, the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society offers a gallery class entitled Lewis and Clark’s South Dakota Adventure to 4th graders. Teachers of all grades are also encouraged to bring students to the museum any time, including for end-of-year field trips. Make your plans today!

Time is running out for students to vote for their favorite books. Voting for the South Dakota Library Association’s Children's and Teen Choice Book Awards closes April 1. Downloadable award certificates, bookmarks, posters and more are available from the State Library.

21st Century School Library Award 21st Century School Library Award applications open until May 1
The State Library recognizes schools with libraries that meet the characteristics of a 21st Century school library through their program, place and professional. School librarians are encouraged to apply for this special recognition.
