Carla Diede, a National Board Certified math teacher at Harrisburg South Middle School, is South Dakota’s newest recipient of a $25,000 award that Teacher magazine calls the “Oscar of Teaching.” State Education Secretary Don Kirkegaard and Greg Gallagher, with the Milken Educator Awards, surprised Diede with the award at a school assembly earlier this month.

Congratulations to South Dakota’s newest National Board Certified teachers! They hail from the Harrisburg, Summit, Rapid City Area and Pierre school districts. National Board Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based, peer-reviewed assessment of a teacher's pedagogical skills and content knowledge.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Apply by Feb. 9 for Smarter Balanced educator opportunities
The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, with support from the South Dakota Department of Education’s Office of Assessment, seeks educators to participate in several content development activities. Smarter Balanced assessments are developed by teachers from consortium states, and South Dakota input is important.

The joint Association for Career and Technical Education/National Association of Agricultural Educators convention took place in December in Nashville, Tenn. Kudos to the South Dakota educators who were honored.

Mentoring. Engage. Encourage. Empower. Share your expertise with new teachers and their mentors
The Department of Education is seeking proposals for breakout sessions at the 2018 Mentoring Summer Academy. More than 600 new teachers and mentors who are participating in the statewide mentor program will attend this event scheduled for June 4-5 in Sioux Falls.

The Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards are state content standards intended to help guide South Dakota K-12 educators in teaching Native American history and culture. A work group has been developing OSEU-aligned sample social studies lessons for teachers of all grade levels. Each month we are highlighting samples, developed using the Inquiry Design Model Blueprint™:

While CPR is not a graduation requirement, as of July 1, 2017, South Dakota Codified Law requires districts to incorporate into district curriculum the skills necessary to perform hands-only CPR and awareness in the use of an AED. The South Dakota Department of Education must annually make school districts aware of available resources for use in providing this instruction, which can be found on the department’s CPR Resources for Schools webpage.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the nation’s highest honor for math and science (including computer science) teachers. Awardees each receive a $10,000 award and a trip to Washington, D.C. Nominations are due April 1.
