Cyle Miller: ‘I expect more, and I get more’

In celebration of CTE Month, we introduce you to Cyle Miller who teaches machining, welding and CAD, or computer aided drafting, at Sturgis Brown High School. A longtime business owner, Miller knew firsthand of skilled workforce needs in South Dakota when he decided he could best help by teaching high school students about his field of expertise.

A work group has reviewed South Dakota’s World Language standards and is seeking input from educators before moving forward with public hearings on proposed standards. Educator feedback is essential to guide members of the work group and to create a final proposed document for the Board of Education Standards to consider for adoption.

February is CTE Month, a time to celebrate career and technical education, which seeks to equip students with academic, employability and technical skills. The Department of Education is encouraging educators and students to participate in the ‘What CTE Means to Me’ social media campaign (#SDCTE, #CTEMonth) and hosting special Wednesday webinars all month.

CTE Learning that works in South Dakota. CTE educators wanted to help with standards unpacking
This March, CTE standards in several career clusters will be up for adoption by the Board of Education Standards. If these standards are adopted, work groups will meet this summer to unpack them in order to provide educators with additional guidance and resources on implementation. Apply by March 12 to participate in a standards unpacking work group.

Educators whose certificates expire July 1 of this year are strongly encouraged to submit their renewal applications as soon as possible. Early application ensures optimal processing. Processing time is typically eight weeks, but during the summer months, may exceed 10 weeks.

The Digital Library February Spotlight: Smarter Balanced Digital Library User’s Guide Webinar
This month we highlight the Smarter Balanced Digital Library User’s Guide Webinar. The Digital Library has partnered with the National Network of State Teachers of the Year to help teachers navigate the library. The Digital Library is an online repository of formative assessment resources available at no cost to all South Dakota public school teachers.

The Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards are state content standards intended to help guide South Dakota K-12 educators in teaching Native American history and culture. A work group has been developing OSEU-aligned sample social studies lessons for teachers of all grade levels. Each month we are highlighting samples, developed using the Inquiry Design Model Blueprint™:

Teachers can highlight their students’ best work in art, literature and photography at the 2018 South Dakota State Fair. The work must be from the 2017-18 school year, and entries must be submitted no later than April 16.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2018 School Officer of the Year Award. The South Dakota Association of School Resource Officers supports this annual award, which is now in its 10th year. Nominees should display professionalism, dedication and commitment to their respective school and/or district. Nominations must be postmarked by March 16.
