For the first time since 1985, South Dakota’s average teacher salaries in the 2016-17 school year were no longer the lowest in the nation. The news comes from the National Education Association’s 2018 Rankings and Estimates report. According to the report, South Dakota’s average teacher salaries increased from $42,025 in 2015-16 to $46,979 in 2016-17 – an increase of $4,954 or 11.8 percent.

The South Dakota Board of Education Standards held a first reading of proposed changes to state graduation requirements at its May 8 meeting. The proposal came about after discussions among education stakeholders across the state this spring. Stakeholders have been examining whether current requirements continue to meet the needs of students, employers and communities.

SDMath/SDSci Leadership is a program to create and support a dynamic network of South Dakota math and science educators. The program selects, challenges, develops and educates South Dakota math and science educators who have demonstrated an interest in leadership skills related to math and science education.

Apply for 2018-19 National Board Certification cohort
DOE will again be facilitating a cohort for teachers who register to begin the National Board Certification process during the 2018-19 cycle. Teachers will receive support and guidance from an assigned mentor, in addition to being able to network with other NBCT candidates. The new cohort will be limited to 20 participants. Also learn about an upcoming Jump Start! training.

The South Dakota State Historical Society has named Mel Fathke of Avon (right, with Secretary of Education Don Kirkegaard) the History Teacher of the Year, one of the Governor’s Awards for History. Fathke was honored April 28 in Rapid City during the society’s annual history conference.

The School Health Program in the South Dakota Departments of Education and Health will offer a workshop June 5, called Implementing the South Dakota Standards and Grade-level Outcomes for Physical Education. The target audience is middle and high school physical education teachers.

The school that logs the most Scholastic summer reading minutes this summer will earn a visit from Gov. Dennis Daugaard and First Lady Linda Daugaard next school year. To participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, students must be registered by a teacher, public librarian or community organization leader. South Dakota Indian Education Summit DOE seeks proposals for 2018 Indian Education Summit

The South Dakota Indian Education Summit targets educators of all content areas and grade levels, as well as administrators and school board members. The goal of the summit is to provide training on best practices in the field of Indian education. Have an idea for a presentation to share with your colleagues? Submit a proposal today! The 2018 summit is scheduled for Sept. 23-25 in Pierre.

New Native American Student Support listserv available

A new listserv has been created for the purpose of providing collaboration and support to educators who primarily work with Native American students. The listserv aims to provide an online venue for educators to collaborate with each other, as well as share enrichment opportunities (scholarships, camps, professional development, etc.). Subscribe via the K12 Data Center.
