Individuals are encouraged to review the proposed standards and provide public comment. The South Dakota Department of Education is seeking science and special education teachers to help with content and bias review for the South Dakota Science Assessment. Educators will help review new assessment items to ensure accuracy, grade-level appropriateness, alignment to South Dakota’s science standards, and potential bias and sensitivity concerns. The application deadline is Oct. 19.

Read for the Record scheduled for Oct. 25
School libraries have an opportunity to join with thousands of other libraries and schools around the country to read the same book to as many kids as possible. This year’s selection is “Maybe Something Beautiful” by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael López. The South Dakota State Library has a limited number of free copies available for distribution.

This school year, give your students a hands-on history lesson at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Interactive exhibits bring history alive. Students can do everything from play a 1970s Atari game (pictured) to hand-milk a model cow. Students can also research their family or town history in the State Archives. Museum and archives visits are free. Hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CDT.

SD EPSCoR Logo Apply by Sept. 27 for SD EPSCoR STEM grants

SD EPSCoR – Education/Workforce Development is looking for innovators in the area of career and technical education who would like to create or improve a program allowing students to explore STEM-related disciplines. Approximately $170,000 will be granted. Grant awards cap at $30,000 each. Applications are due Sept. 27. See the Request for Proposal and Application.

September is Suicide Prevention Month. The South Dakota Department of Social Services has developed a suicide awareness and prevention campaign, BeThe1SD, to help decrease the number of suicides in South Dakota. The ‘BeThe1SD’ campaign emphasizes a positive message that encourages youth to be vigilant about the signs of suicide and to “be the one” to make a difference.

Photo of SD Capitol Encourage students to be pages during 2019 legislative session

The South Dakota Legislature is accepting applications from high school students interested in serving as pages during the 2019 legislative session. Students must be juniors or seniors (seniors are given preference), must be sponsored by a legislator and be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher is encouraged).

The Systems Change Conference will be held Oct. 17-19 in Sioux Falls. Grant Lichtman and Sarah Brown Wessling will deliver keynote addresses. Sean Covel will speak at the Teacher of the Year banquet Oct. 18, during which the 2019 State Teacher of the Year will be announced.
