Message from the Governor and State Education Secretary
As we consider the big picture of education in South Dakota, it’s no secret that our schools are dealing with a number of challenges. These challenges range from shrinking enrollments and increased accountability to an increase in the cost of doing business.
We commend South Dakota’s educators for their tremendous efforts to educate our young people. Every year, school and community leaders rise to the challenge and find innovative ways to put students first. These efforts are reflected in our student achievement levels, test scores, and solid attendance and graduation rates.
The state of South Dakota also has risen to the challenge. In the past three years, the state has provided aid to schools that exceeded the amount required by state law. In an environment in which voters repealed a $30 million inheritance tax, that is a record we are proud of. As you will see in this report, the Department of Education also has initiated programs designed to support first-year teachers, enhance the rigor of the high school experience, and provide extended standards for students with disabilities.
When thinking about the future, we believe it’s crucial to remain focused on educational opportunities for students. These opportunities include advanced coursework in math and science, access to foreign language courses, and access to technical education – all of which directly prepare students for college or technical school.
As we look to the future, we pledge to remain focused on providing the best educational opportunities for students and the brightest future for South Dakota.
Sincerely,
Governor Mike Rounds
Secretary Rick Melmer Ed.D.
