2006 Annual Report

Student Demographics

This section presents enrollment data and student demographics. Not surprisingly, K-12 enrollment at South Dakota’s schools has decreased by 4 percent over the last five years. The number of public school students in each grade level also has declined, with two exceptions. Kindergarten and 1st grade enrollments increased slightly.

One-quarter of the state’s public school districts had enrollments of less than 200 in 2005-06. One-quarter had enrollments of more than 600 students, and the remainder fell in between the two. Sioux Falls and Rapid City, the two largest districts, accounted for approximately 27 percent of public school students.
