The percentage of South Dakota students who are overweight or obese was still at a high rate in the state’s latest school height and weight survey. For the 2009-10 school year, 32.7% of the students were said to be overweight or obese. The rate in the 2008-09 school year showed the number at 33.6%.
Kristin Biskeborn, State Nutritionist for the Department of Health, says it’s encouraging that the percentage of overweight students didn’t increase, but the fact that it is unchanged means there’s lots of work to do to cut child obesity and health risks for our youth.
The Departments of Health and Education work together to conduct the annual South Dakota School Height Weight Report to track child overweight and obesity rates. The full report, including strategies for schools and communities, is available on the Department of Health’s website at http://doh.sd.gov/SchoolWeight
